Gourmet Food is Good, But Gift Basket Designers Know That It's Snack Food People Crave

A recent article in Business Week confirms what gift basket designers know. Snack foods are alive and well and are consumed in record numbers.

The article tells how Frito-Lay, makers of Lay's, Doritos, Tostitos, Fritos, Cheetos, Rold Gold, Ruffles, and SunChips products, revved up its production to 10 million lbs. in readiness for Super Bowl Sunday 2007.

And they have good reason to be optimistic. The Business Week article reports that last year, tortilla chips alone experienced a $10.2 million sales increase during Super Bowl week, and potato chips saw a $7.8 million increase.

As gift basket designers we certainly feature gourmet foods in our gift baskets. Although many of our customers and recipients love gourmet food, however, it's snack food they crave.

What's your take on this?

You're right Flora. Snack foods is one of our biggest sellers for gift basket designers. The key is to find snack items that are not also found on the grocery or mass market shelves. Make an effort to find unique items so that customers feel that they are getting something of value.
